Scarborough Beach
2017
The Scarborough Redevelopment was a major state and local government project to transform the beachfront and reposition Scarborough as a safe, attractive and contemporary beach destination.
Public art played a significant role in this plan and took an integrated approach to the design process. Artists Sharon Egan and Bevan Honey’s artworks bring local stories and culture into the public domain.
Sharyn Egan’s Weaving Stories, is based on her weaving practice and is translated into the canopies of the arbour structures in the main concourse. This was collaboration with Fred Chaney Architects.
Bevan Honey’s GT Scarborough, gives a nod to the historic car culture of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. The area was a popular spot for car enthusiasts to cruise and socialise, a tradition that continues today.
Tony Jone OAM & Ben Jones’, Watch over you, 2014 is a tribute to our surf lifesavers and was launched at the start of the 2014 Australian Surf Live Saving Championships. The two bronze life savers are decked out in 1960s surf life saver uniforms.
