Harley Richards’ celebrates the ancient waterways and pathways used by the Noongar people of Lake Goollelal. This is a culturally significant area and a Registered Aboriginal Site because it was a meeting place and a burial place.

Natural elements are represented by Noongar symbols for waterholes, resting places and family. These waterways contained Djijit (fish) and Djulgee (fresh water lobster), Yerrigan,(freshwater long neck turtle) and Yederup (duck).

The Djiridgee, or the Zamia Palm was a significant plant for Noongar people. The flower has been used in my mural and the scarlet colour is used across the mural. The striking scarlet hue of the Djiridji is a symbol of resilience and vitality.  The bold straight line pattern is inspired by traditional Noongar shield designs and are a tribute to the Noongar families of this place.
